Why pond owners add aeration
Still water can develop low oxygen near the bottom, especially in warm weather or in deeper ponds where the upper and lower layers separate. A properly sized aerator keeps water circulating and helps carry oxygen through more of the water column.
It is most useful on ponds with:
- fish or other aquatic life
- heavier organic matter and bottom muck
- limited natural circulation
- warm summer conditions
Aeration helps on its own, but it works best as part of routine pond care rather than a fix for every water-quality issue.
The main types, and when each fits
Bottom-diffused for deeper ponds (PondSeries)
A compressor on shore pushes air through airline to diffusers on the pond floor, moving bottom water up and circulating the water column.
Choose the Airmax PondSeries when your pond is deeper than about 6 feet. It is built for ponds from 1/2 to 6 acres and depths up to 50 feet, using a SilentAir rocking piston compressor.
Bottom-diffused for shallow water (SW20, SW40)
The SW20 and SW40 are built for ponds and coves up to 1/2 acre and 6 feet deep. The SW20 draws 50 W and the SW40 draws 100 W.
Choose one of these when the water stays at 6 feet or less and you still want circulation from the bottom up.
Floating aerating fountain (EcoSeries)
Choose the Airmax EcoSeries 1/2 HP Pond Fountain when the spray pattern matters as much as the aeration. It floats in 24 inches of water and comes with three display patterns: Classic, Crown & Trumpet, and Trumpet.
If the main goal is moving and oxygenating deeper water, compare our subsurface pond air diffusers and aerators instead.
Solar systems (SolarSeries)
Choose a SolarSeries system when there is no practical way to run power to the pond. The Direct Drive model serves ponds up to 2 acres and runs up to 12 hours a day on sunlight, while the Battery Backup model stores energy for up to 24 hours of operation. The Solar Pond Aerating Fountain adds a spray display on solar power alone.
See our full solar pond aerators collection for off-grid options.
How to choose the right size or model
Start with four details about your pond.
- Depth: water at 6 feet or less points to the SW20 or SW40; deeper water points to the PondSeries. Fountains need at least 24 inches.
- Acreage: PondSeries covers 1/2 to 6 acres, the SW20 and SW40 cover up to 1/2 acre, and SolarSeries Direct Drive covers up to 2 acres.
- Shape: long, divided or irregular ponds with separate basins may need more than one diffuser to move water evenly.
- Goal: bottom-to-top circulation and muck digestion favor diffused aeration, while surface movement and a visible display favor a fountain.

Power and placement
Bottom-diffused electric systems need power on shore and a route for the airline down to the water, so plan the compressor location and airline path before ordering.
The EcoSeries fountain floats on the surface and uses plug-and-play setup. Solar models run on sunlight and do best on open ground with good sun exposure, so check the site for shade and panel mounting first.
What comes with a system
The Airmax Shallow Water Aeration System is sold as a complete kit including compressor, cabinet, diffusers, airline, and fittings.
Included components differ between the PondSeries, the EcoSeries fountain and the SolarSeries models, so check each product page for airline length, cabinet, controls and diffuser count. For diffuser options, see our subsurface pond air diffusers and aerators collection.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about our airmax pond aerators.
How do I know if I need the SW20 or SW40, or the PondSeries?
Depth decides it. The SW20 and SW40 are built for ponds and coves that stay at 6 feet or less, up to 1/2 acre. For deeper water, the PondSeries covers 1/2 to 6 acres and depths up to 50 feet.
Will the direct-drive solar aerator run overnight, or do I need battery backup?
No, it does not cover night hours on its own. The SolarSeries Direct Drive runs on sunlight and delivers up to 12 hours of aeration a day, while the Battery Backup model stores energy for up to 24 hours of operation if your fish need aeration after dark.
Which Airmax systems work where there is no shoreline power?
The SolarSeries models do. The Direct Drive system, the Battery Backup system and the Solar Pond Aerating Fountain all run on sunlight, so no electrical service is needed at the pond.
Does the kit include the airline, diffusers and compressor cabinet?
Yes, on the Airmax Shallow Water Aeration System, which includes compressor, cabinet, diffusers, airline and fittings. Included components vary by system, so check the individual product page before ordering.
What is the minimum water depth for the EcoSeries fountain?
The EcoSeries fountain operates in 24 inches of water. Shallower than that is not suited to this model.
