Why a lion fountain works well outdoors
A lion fountain gives a garden one clear focal point that reads from a distance, and the carved figures are why many buyers choose it over a plain bowl or sphere.
The moving water does a second job. Multi-tier streams make a fuller sound that can help cover street noise, traffic hum, or equipment noise, which is useful in courtyards and driveways that sit near a road.
A lion fountain tends to suit:
- entryways and motor courts that need a formal centerpiece
- enclosed patios and courtyard corners
- gardens with a classical or Old-World look
- bare walls and fences that need something built against them
- larger grounds where a small feature would get lost
Freestanding, wall-mounted, or estate fountain
This is the first decision, because it sets where the fountain can go and how much room it needs.
Freestanding tiered fountains
Water falls from sculpted figures through one, two, or three tiers into a basin below. These are meant to be read from all sides.
Choose a freestanding tiered fountain when you have an open central spot, such as a garden bed, the middle of a courtyard, or a driveway island. PondHaven carries compact pieces for patio corners as well as larger tiered designs.
Wall fountains
These sit flat against a wall with a low basin, so they take up very little floor space. The Fiore Stone Lion Quatrefoil Outdoor Wall Fountain has a flat back for flush placement.
Choose a wall fountain when floor space is tight or you want the feature built into a wall, patio edge, or fence line. The GIST Lion Wall Water Fountain is made from glass fiber reinforced concrete, which the maker describes as resistant to cracking and weathering.
Estate and pedestal fountains
These are the large pieces: pedestal fountains with plumbed bowls, and fountains paired with wide ground basins. The Fiore Stone Lion Outdoor Fountain with Lion Pedestal and Plumbed Bowl stands 114 inches tall, and the Four Seasons Fountain with Lion Base Pedestals includes a 12-foot pond.
Choose an estate fountain when you have a large courtyard, wide driveway, or open grounds where a big footprint and a loud, full cascade belong. For smaller spaces, compare our statue outdoor fountains or tiered outdoor fountains instead.
How to choose the right size
Match the fountain to the space around it, not just the spot it sits in.
- Overall height. The largest pedestal model here stands 114 inches tall, while the compact tiered pieces are sized for smaller gardens and patios. A tall pedestal needs open ground so it is not crowded by plants or walls.
- Basin footprint. Models with integrated basins include 46-inch, 55-inch, and 66-inch quatrefoil designs, and the largest setup uses a 12-foot pond. Allow room around the basin for access and cleaning.
- Tier count. Single-tier spouts give a gentle trickle. Two and three-tier designs move more water and make a heavier sound.
- Sound level. If masking noise is part of the goal, pick a multi-tier or plumbed model. Several of the larger fountains here fall into our loud sound category.

Foundation, power, and winter care
Cast stone fountains are heavy before water goes in, so the base matters as much as the fountain. As general guidance for this kind of feature:
- Level, stable base. Freestanding pedestals usually sit best on a compacted, level concrete surface. Soft ground or loose gravel can let a piece settle, which often leads to cracks and water spilling over one side.
- Wall support. Wall models are dense, especially once filled, so plan on structural masonry, brick, or reinforced framing behind them. Siding alone rarely gives enough support.
- Power. An outdoor GFCI outlet near the fountain is the usual way to run the submersible pump.
- Winter care. In freezing climates, drain the fountain, let it dry, and cover it before hard freeze. Ice forming inside cast stone is a common cause of cracks.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about our lion outdoor fountains.
Does a lion fountain need a dedicated water line?
No, most models recirculate their own water with a pump and need a power source rather than a plumbed supply line. The one exception in this group is the Fiore Stone Lion Outdoor Fountain with Lion Pedestal and Plumbed Bowl, which is built to connect to a pond or basin system for a continuous multi-stream display. Check the individual product page for pump and cord details.
What kind of foundation does a cast stone lion fountain need?
A level, compacted poured-concrete pad is the usual base. Because these fountains carry a lot of weight once filled, soft ground or loose gravel can let the piece settle, which cracks the stone and causes uneven water spill.
Can I hang a lion wall fountain on siding?
Plan on structural masonry, brick, or reinforced framing behind a wall fountain, since the piece is heavy even before water goes in. If your wall is only siding over light framing, add proper support first or choose a freestanding model.
How loud is the water sound?
Single-tier spouts give a gentle trickle, while two and three-tier falls and plumbed bowls make a much fuller cascade that can help cover street noise. Several of the larger fountains here fall into our loud sound category, and the product pages describe the water flow in more detail.
