Why put a dolphin fountain in the yard?
A dolphin fountain gives a yard something to look at and something to hear. Water moving over sculpted stone creates a steady sound that can help soften street noise and nearby activity, and it gives a garden a fixed point that planting can be built around.
The dolphin and ocean motifs suit coastal and nautical planting schemes, pool patios, and courtyards where a sea-inspired subject feels at home. It also works as an everyday garden piece if you simply like the subject matter.
These fountains add movement and sound to a space. They are decorative water features, not a substitute for pond filtration or water treatment.
The main types, and when to choose each
The designs here are all cast stone, but they sit differently in a space.
Wall fountain
A flat-backed piece that rests against a wall, fence, or courtyard boundary. Choose a wall fountain when floor space is limited and you have a solid vertical surface to set it against. The Fiore Stone Classic Dolphin Wall Outdoor Fountain is the model in this group.
Freestanding bowl fountain
Dolphins set over an octagon or shell bowl that catches and holds water. Choose a bowl fountain when the piece will stand in the open and be seen from all sides, such as a lawn center, a circular driveway, or a courtyard.

Figural tiered fountain
Sculptural pieces where water moves over the figures themselves. Choose one of these when you want a piece that reads as garden statuary first, such as in a patio corner or a planting bed. The Boy on Dolphins and Dolphins Garden Water Fountain designs sit here, and more tiered designs are in our tiered outdoor fountains.
Cast stone is a fixed, permanent material. If you want something light enough to move around by hand or to float in an existing pond, those live in other fountain and pond categories.
How to choose the right size and model
Start with the spot you have in mind, then work outward from there.
- Mounting style. A wall piece needs a flat vertical surface behind it. A bowl or tiered piece needs clearance on all sides so it can be walked around and viewed.
- Basin or no basin. Bowl designs hold a pool of water below the figures, which tends to give a fuller splash sound. Designs without a basin move water across the sculpture itself.
- Sound level. Water falling into a bowl reads differently from water sheeting down a wall panel. If the sound matters to you, it is worth deciding before you pick a model.
- Scale. Pieces in this group run from patio scale up to tall estate wall designs, so compare the listed dimensions against your wall length, bed width, or courtyard opening.
More detail on sizing a fountain for a space is in our guide, How to choose an outdoor fountain. Broader sculptural designs are in outdoor statue water fountains.
Foundation, power, and water
Cast stone is heavy, so a level, compacted base such as a poured concrete pad, stone pavers, or firm, well-settled gravel helps keep a piece from leaning or shifting.
These fountains recirculate their own water, so there is no plumbing line to run. Plan for access to outdoor power near the fountain for the pump, fill the piece with a garden hose, and top it off now and then to replace what evaporation and splash take away.
Because these are large, heavy pieces, work out the path from the delivery point to the base before it arrives.
Not sure which one you need?
Send PondHaven a photo of the spot, roughly how much room you have, whether it is against a wall or out in the open, and how noticeable you want the water sound to be. We can point you to the models that fit.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about our dolphin outdoor fountains.
Do dolphin fountains need a dedicated water line?
No, these fountains recirculate their own water. You fill the basin or reservoir with a garden hose and top it off from time to time to replace water lost to evaporation and splash.
What kind of base does a cast stone fountain need?
A level, compacted surface such as a poured concrete pad, stone pavers, or firm gravel. The pieces are heavy enough that soft or uneven ground can let them lean or settle out of level.
How does water move on these models?
It varies by design. On one model water flows from the dolphins' blowholes, and on the bowl designs it runs into an octagon or shell basin. Each product page shows the flow for that model.
How is a wall dolphin fountain different from a freestanding bowl fountain?
A wall fountain has a flat back and sits against a wall, fence, or courtyard boundary, so it takes up little ground space. A bowl fountain stands on its own in the open and needs room on every side for viewing and access.
Can these fountains stay outside during freezing weather?
Drain or cover a filled fountain before hard winter weather. Water expands when it freezes, so ask us about your climate before leaving one filled through a freeze.
