Guide & FAQ
How to choose the right large pond kit
- 4 min overview
- Types, sizing & installation
- 5 common questions
Why buy a complete pond kit?
A matched kit takes the planning out of a pond build, so you are not left guessing whether the pump, filter and liner suit each other. It keeps circulation and filtration in step with the pond you are digging.
A matched setup is the practical answer to the problems that send pond owners looking for help:
- murky or discolored water
- leaves and surface debris sinking to the bottom
- odors and muck buildup
- low oxygen around fish and plants
- pumps that clog or filter too little water
Kit components are chosen to work as one system, so one part is not doing more than its share.
The main types, and when to choose each
Most people are choosing between four kinds of product.
Lined water garden and koi pond kits
Choose a lined kit when you are building a contained pond from scratch and want a skimmer, a biological waterfall filter and a visible waterfall or stream.
EasyPro kits come in Mini, Small and Medium versions built around a liner and underlayment, a skimmer and an AquaFalls filter with a molded rock lip. The Small and Medium kits use a 45-mil EPDM DuraLiner, and the Medium kit pairs a PS1FB skimmer with a Medium AquaFalls filter. The Blue Thumb Elite kit matches liner, skimmer, biological waterfall filter, pump and fittings as one system. For smaller builds, see our pond kits.
Bottom-diffused aeration systems
Choose an aeration system when the pond is an unlined earth pond or a large, deep water body where oxygen and circulation matter more than a waterfall.
A compressor on shore pushes air to diffusers on the pond floor, and the rising bubbles move deeper water toward the surface. The Outdoor Water Solutions AerMaster Shallow models are sized for 0.5 to 1.5 acres. The AerMaster Pro Deep is the one to look at for ponds that reach 40 feet. EasyPro's high pressure rocking piston systems run a 2 hp SRC2002 compressor with either 6 or 10 diffusers.
Floating aerating fountains
Choose a fountain when appearance matters as much as circulation, or when the pond is shallow.
The Outdoor Water Solutions EcoSeries comes with four nozzles (Equinox, Jupiter, Neutron and Nova), and the Classic Series switches between three displays from one nozzle on ponds up to 5 acres. The Aerify moves 500 gallons per minute and runs in as little as 18 inches of water.
Bulk liner rolls
Choose a liner roll when your pond shape is custom and you would rather source pumps and filters separately. EasyPro DuraLiner is a 45-mil EPDM rubber liner sold in bulk rolls.
How to choose the right size or model
Start with the pond itself rather than the product.
- Footprint and depth. A lined pond needs liner sized for the length, width and depth you dig, including the overlap at the top. Deep open water asks for bottom-diffused aeration instead of waterfall filtration.
- Filtration and flow. Pump and skimmer need to move the pond's volume, and the biological filter needs enough media to handle your planned fish load.
- Your main goal. Fish and garden ponds are about clean containment and clear water. Acreage ponds are about oxygen and circulation across open water.
- Maintenance. A skimmer gives the pump a protected home and catches leaves before they sink and become muck.
If you are between two options, ask us before ordering. Kits with a little headroom for the pond are usually easier to live with than ones running at their limit.
Installation, power and placement
A water garden kit puts the pump in a skimmer at the pond's low edge and pumps up to a biological filter box set at the top of the waterfall. Plan on trenching for flex hose and shaping flat shelves in the excavation.
For aeration, the compressor cabinet can sit on shore at a distance, with quick-sink tubing running to the diffusers. The EasyPro rocking piston systems take fittings for 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch Quick Sink tubing.
Check the electrical requirements on the product page before you order. Heavy multi-diffuser compressors and big fountains can draw considerably more than a standard pond pump, so the circuit and run distance are worth planning first.
What normally comes with a pond kit
A complete water garden kit usually includes the liner, a skimmer, a biological waterfall filter, pump, tubing and fittings, with underlayment on many kits. Exact contents vary by kit, so read the product page closely.
Plan to buy separately:
- rock, boulders and gravel for weighing down and hiding the liner
- an outdoor power supply and any trenching or conduit
- water treatments and fish, if you want them
Not sure which one you need?
Send us the pond's length, width, average depth and how close power is, and we can narrow the options. A photo of the site and where the water would sit helps too.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about our large pond kits.
What comes in a large pond kit, and what do I need to buy separately?
A complete water garden kit usually includes the liner, a skimmer, a biological waterfall filter, pump, tubing and fittings. Rock, boulders, gravel and the outdoor power supply are normally purchased separately, since they are sourced locally.
How do I size a pond kit for my yard?
Start with the length, width and depth you plan to dig, then match liner dimensions, pump flow and filter to that volume. Depth matters as much as surface area, so measure both before choosing.
When do I need a bottom-diffuser aerator instead of a waterfall pump?
When the pond is unlined, deep, or spread across acreage rather than built as a garden feature. Bottom-diffused systems move oxygen through more of the water column, which is usually the priority on open water.
Can I keep koi in one of these ponds year-round?
A lined pond with a skimmer and biological filter is the usual setup for keeping koi. What decides the outcome is pond volume, filtration capacity and depth, so plan the kit around the fish load you want to keep.
What should I send PondHaven if I am unsure which kit fits?
Send the pond's length, width, average depth and how close power is, along with a photo of the site if you have one. Those details are enough for us to suggest the right kit or aeration system.
